Revealing What is Oud

Revealing What is Oud

A complete guide to Arabia’s liquid gold.

Oud Perfumes, Arabia's Liquid Gold.

There’s a moment at a Majlis, in a hotel lobby, possibly in a café in your favorite mall or maybe just on an elevator where a scent stops you in your tracks. It lingers for long in your senses, mesmerizing you speechless in that instant. Warm. Resinous. Mature. A little smoky. A little sweet. Completely unforgettable.

That's oud.

And you’re not the only one it grips into its charm. It has been a source of fascination for people for ages.

Does English has a word for “Oud”?

Oud has many names depending on which region you are in. However, in English it is generally referred to as AGARWOOD

Describing Agerwood:  Formed inside Aquilaria trees native to the South and Southeast Asian Forests, it is a dark resinous heartwood referred to as Eaglewood and Aloeswood in older literature.

It does sound something fancy to people who don’t understand Arabic but the word "Oud" (دوع) is Arabic for "wood." Nothing special or obviously outstanding to emphasize on its great notes, it’s wildly understated.
Some say it is saffron, and others just wood, but calling it wood is like calling saffron just spice. Precisely.

Why Is Oud So Rare?

Here is where it gets fascinating. Oud is naturally found in all Aquilaria trees as a defensive measure to fight a fungus infection called Phialophora parasitica. The tree reacts by secreting a dark, aromatic resin that permeates the heartwood over time. The result of which is what we call Agarwood or Oud.

Only about 2% of Aquilaria trees in the wild develop this resin naturally. That scarcity is one of the main reasons what is oud made out of is such a frequent question because the answer is equal parts biology, time and luck.

Oud Wood, Oud Oil and Oud Perfume

This confuses a lot of people, so here is the simplest way to think about it.

Oud wood: It is the raw material in the form of Agarwood chips or pieces. These are generally burned as incense. In the Gulf countries, it is a very common practice to perfume homes, malls, clothes and hair this way in daily life. The smoke clings beautifully.

Oud oil: Also known as Dehn-al-Oud, it is extracted through steam distillation of the wood. It is one of the most expensive natural oils in the world.  Sometimes more expensive than gold by weight. A single gram can cost hundreds of dollars depending on origin and quality.

Oud perfume: More like what is Oud fragrance in the modern sense. Blends oud oil with other notes to create something wearable and layered. This is where brands like Mawwal Arabia come in, crafting the best Arabic Perfumes Collection that bring genuine oud depth to everyday wear without requiring you to remortgage anything.

Why Is Oud So Expensive?

Three reasons.

Scarcity. Wild agarwood is now listed as endangered under CITES. Sustainable farming exists but takes twenty or more years before a tree produces quality resin.

Complexity. The scent of oud varies dramatically by region. Indian oud is rich and animalic. Cambodian oud is sweeter. Vietnamese oud is softer and woodier. Each origin commands a different price.

Extraction yield. It takes an enormous volume of infected wood to produce even a small quantity of oil. The process is painstaking, unhurried and absolutely unforgiving of shortcuts.

What Is Oud Scent And What Does It Actually Smell Like?

People worldwide are curious about this as not everyone gets to experience this opulent fragrance. Oud is warm, woody, slightly smoky and deeply resinous. It adapts well with the blend leaning to be sweet, leathery, earthy or even slightly herbal. It is always intense. It never disappears quietly.

In Mawwal's Rayhan Collection, Oud appears in the base alongside Amber and Musk, grounding a bright Mango and Ginger opening into something far deeper. In Bidaya, Oud anchors a floral heart softening it just enough to make it genuinely wearable for every day.

Such multi-functionality is precisely what oud perfume is in the modern day: not a historical facet of perfume, but a material that feels and acts like a living organism with a unique character in each blend it is used.

What Is Amber Oud?

Amber oud is a well-known scent composition with the amber resin adding a warm base while the depth of oud brings in the smoky woodiness. Amber in this case is not fossilized tree resin. It's also the name of a warm, sweet, slightly powdery accord in perfumery, which is usually composed of benzoin and/or vanilla and/or labdanum among other things. When you put it with Oud, now it’s sweet and dark, easy and complicated. It’s one of the most classic and adored combinations in the Arab world, and a good starting point for those unfamiliar with Oud centric scents.

Why Oud Still Matters Today

Burning Oud before a guest arrives is an act of hospitality and respect in the Gulf countries. It has been that way for centuries. The rest of the world is finally beginning to catch up slowly realizing that the most complex, long-lasting, genuinely distinctive fragrances often have oud at their core.

If you have never explored it properly, now is a good time. Start with the Oud perfumes collection at Mawwal Arabia where luxury oud fragrances are crafted not too intense as suitable for daily wear without compromising on depth or authenticity. Frequently Asked Questions:

What is Oud perfume exactly?

Oud perfume is a scent that contains a concentrate of Oudh oil derived from a naturally infected Agarwood tree as a key note. It is warm, balsamic and long lasting and it is the basis of tradition in Arabic perfumes.

What Is the Perfume Note of Oud Like?

Warm and Woody, Smoky, Sweet and Deeply Complex. It depends on the source. Indian oud is deeper and more animalic, Cambodian is lighter and sweeter, Vietnamese is more woody, etc.

Is Oud only for men?

Not a bit. Because oud is a traditional unisex note and is included in women, men and unisex fragrances. A great deal of Mawwal’s ouds blends, actually separable in unisex blends.

Why is Oud so expensive?

Because this resin only develops in approximately 2% of wild Aquilaria trees, the species is endangered, extraction yields are low, and the tree-to-bottle process takes decades. That’s simply one of the reasons the Oud is the rarest natural smell touch in the earth.

Amber Oud, what is it?

One of the most popular fragrance pairings is that of amber that is a warm, sweet, vanilla-like accord in combination with the rich, resin or wood like scent of the Oud. Yes it is one of the easiest to approach Arabic scent for anyone who has been afraid of diving head first into Oud heavy fragrances.
